For those who are new

For those who are considering joining me, I am reading, along with many in our church, through the Bible four chapters a day. We began Jan 1 with the New Testament, Matthew 1, and are reading through The Revelation, finishing the New Testament on March 7th. Then we are going back to the beginning of Genesis 1 and reading straight through, four chapters a day, both the Old and again, the New Testament. This model of Bible study is taken from Dr. Robert Tuttle, professor at Asbury Theological Seminary, who has spent the last 40 years reading through the Bible every year.

Beginning with Discipline

Hi all,
I have decided to begin to post my thoughts as I read through the Bible this year. We are already well on our way and there is little time to slack when the task is reading four chapters a day. One of the first things that is proving to be important in this endeavor is discipline. It does not take long for chapters to mount up if a couple of days go by without tending to the reading. I suppose it will be possible to read large sections of text in order to catch up but there will be something missing if daily attention is rarely given to reading. If you've been reading you will be through a lot of the New testament and into 1 Corinthians 3-7 today.

Some people have been telling me they have been reading two chapters in the morning and two at night. Others have been reading all four first thing in the morning and still others four in the evening as they prepare for bed. One couple has been reading it aloud together, alternating chapters. I love that. Tell me about your form of discipline; when and how you spend your time reading through the Bible.
